Rhinitis

What is Rhinitis?

Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal mucosa, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itching. It can be classified into different types based on the underlying cause.

Types of Rhinitis

  • Allergic Rhinitis: Triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold.
  • Non-Allergic Rhinitis: Caused by environmental factors like smoke, pollution, strong odors, or changes in weather.
  • Infectious Rhinitis: Typically caused by viral infections, such as the common cold.

Symptoms

  • Runny nose (rhinorrhea)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy nose and throat
  • Postnasal drip

Treatment Options

  • Avoiding known allergens and irritants
  • Using antihistamines for allergic rhinitis
  • Nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation
  • Saline nasal sprays or irrigation for symptom relief
  • Decongestants (short-term use only)
